"" Silence is a virtue of fools "" - Francis Bacon.

Gunnthrain was once ( 1995 - 2016 ) the main project of Amsterdam based underground sound artist Johannes Breeuwsma aka Zu Dir. All through the misty haze of long gone years - still going strong - he has been building this catalogue slowly and seemingly almost reluctant. From deliberate lofi (radio)noisy interludes to hifi stereo spread infinite soundscapes he refers to his own work as Magnificent Desolation. He prefers to ride alone, living a self-chosen life ( in his own words ) "in shadows and beyond".

Gunnthrain's influences range from Joy Division to Biosphere, from Velvet Underground to Cocteau Twins, from Nick Cave to Brian Eno, from Underworld to Mathias Grassow, from Erik Satie to Thomas Köner, from Harold Budd to Pink Floyd, and all over again.

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Dylan Thomas ( 1914 - 1953 )

Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night, a poem composed in 1951, is considered to be among the finest works by the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914 - 1953). Written for his dying father, it is one of Thomas' most quoted works. The poem urges his father to fight against death - to " burn and rave at close of day " - rather than surrendering. The poet himself certainly burned with zest for life. Unfortunately, he indulged in it recklessly, drinking heavily, and dying soon after the poem was published.

As such Do Not Go gentle Into That Good Night lies at the heart of Gunnthrain's Magnificent Desolation : on the one hand Life's ( possible ) Grandeur with its seemingly endless temptations and possibilities, while on the other hand ( again possible ) the disappointments, its inevitable decay and ( for some total ) horror.

On the one hand the " raging against the dying of the light ", while on the other hand the awareness of " this is the end, my beautiful friend " - a synthesis of Darkness and Light, a synthesis of ( more cosmic ) Night and Day.

"" Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation. Tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolster his ego. His inhuman void spreads on like a gray vegetation. "" - Jean Arp.
